By Mia Huff

April 23, 2015

On Wednesday, April 22, our very own track and field team took part in a meet at Louisa High School.

On this spring April day, the team bus arrived to rain pouring on the track, but luckily the sun came out and the meet remained dry there after.

The team participated in the 1600 meter(mile), 3200 meter(two miles), 4×400 meter, 800 meter, 400 meter, 200 meter, and the 100 meter on the track. Both boys and girls participated in the events against schools such as Louisa, Charlottesville High, and Albemarle High School.

Some of the team’s greatest performers included Laura Habermeyer (‘16), who came in first place in the 1600 meter with a time of 5:31.86, and Gena Lewis (‘16), who came in third place with a time of 5:38.72. In the boys’ 1600 meter, Andrew Gonce (‘15) came in third place with 5:00.11 and Mac Sochor (‘15) in fourth place with 5:00.83.

In the 3200 meter, Renee Craft (‘17) placed in first with a time of 13:09.35 and Adam Gonce (‘15) in fourth with 11:20.44.

In the 4×400 meter relay, the Monticello team, made up of Isabelle Hermsmeier, Sophie Kane, Gena Lewis, and Laura Habermeyer, came in third place with a collective time of 4:30.87.

In the 800 meter, Isabelle Hermsmeier took second place with a time of 2:30.97 and Mac Sochor in fifth place, earning a time of 2:11.76.

In the field events, Monticello had two students in the pole vault and many students in the shotput and discus. Gena Lewis came in third for pole vaulting, clearing 7 feet. Forest Veerhoff came in third as well, clearing 8 feet. Discus thrower Noah Borgerson (‘16) came in third place, throwing at 94-04.00.

With so little schools taking part in the meet, the times earned didn’t qualify for the States meet, but they did qualify for the Regionals.
